Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years for sexual assault after a New York court convicted the former Hollywood producer of sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.
Haley addressed the court before Weinstein received his sentence. She described the lasting impact of the assault and the years she spent seeking justice.
“Being sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away,” Haley told the court.
She also spoke about the fear and scrutiny that followed her decision to speak publicly about the assault.
“It’s a life sentence for me,” Haley said.
The conviction relates to the 2006 sexual assault involving Haley, who worked as a television production assistant at the time.
The case has kept attention on Weinstein and the allegations of sexual misconduct that have followed him for years.
However, the latest sentence concerns the New York conviction involving Haley.
Before the sentence was handed down, Haley told the court about the effect the assault had on her sense of safety.
She said the consequences had continued long after the incident itself.
The 15-year sentence now places Weinstein in prison following the conviction.
For Haley, however, the court proceedings also marked another stage in a long pursuit of justice.
The case illustrates the continuing legal consequences of the sexual assault conviction and the testimony presented in court.
