Crystal Palace clinched the Community Shield in dramatic fashion on Sunday, edging past Liverpool 4-2 on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw at Wembley.
Liverpool burst into life inside four minutes when debutant Hugo Ekitike pounced to open the scoring. But Palace struck back swiftly from the penalty spot after Ismaila Sarr was brought down in the box, with Jean-Philippe Mateta calmly sending Alisson Becker the wrong way.
The Reds regained their lead almost immediately, as Jeremie Frimpong’s looping cross sailed over Dean Henderson and into the net. Yet, with minutes remaining, Sarr broke free and slotted home to drag the Eagles level once more, forcing a penalty shootout.
Henderson emerged as the hero, pulling off a string of superb saves to deny Liverpool and hand Palace their second piece of silverware this year, adding the Community Shield to their FA Cup triumph.
