According to Pope Francis, laws criminalizing homosexuality are “unjust,” because homosexuality is not a crime.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, January 25, the Pope stated that God loves all of his children exactly as they are and urged Catholic bishops who support the laws to welcome LGBTQ people into the church.

“It’s not a crime to be gay,” Francis said during the interview, adding, “It’s not a crime. True, but it is a sin. Okay, but first let’s define the difference between a sin and a crime.” “It’s also a sin not to be charitable to one another,” he added.

Francis acknowledged that Catholic bishops in some parts of the world support laws that criminalize homosexuality or discriminate against the LGBTQ community, but he attributed such attitudes to cultural backgrounds, and he said bishops, in particular, must undergo a process of change to recognize the dignity of all.
