The House of Repr
esentatives has urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to curb the soaring prices of fertilizer and other essential farm inputs, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s food security.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by during plenary, where he raised alarm over the sharp increase in the cost of fertilizers, pesticides, and other critical agricultural inputs needed by farmers nationwide.
Hon. Yusuf Shitu Galambi , representing the Gwaram Federal Constituency in Jigawa State noted that the continuous rise in prices has placed immense pressure on farmers, particularly small-scale producers who form the backbone of the nation’s food supply chain. He cautioned that if the situation persists, it could lead to reduced crop yields, higher food prices, and worsening hunger across the country.
“Nigerian farmers depend on affordable fertilizers and farm inputs to sustain production. The current price surge threatens not just their livelihood but the entire nation’s food supply,” Galambi stated.
In adopting the motion, the House called on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to implement immediate measures aimed at reducing fertilizer costs and making inputs more accessible to farmers.
The lawmakers also mandated the Committees on Agricultural Production and Services and Legislative Compliance to monitor and ensure strict enforcement of the resolution, emphasizing the importance of government intervention to stabilize the agricultural sector.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring that policies and programs are directed toward achieving food sufficiency, lowering production costs, and reducing dependency on food imports.
