Bola Tinubu, a candidate for president of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), gave him the name Abraham.
At a gathering with members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and members of the Christian community held on Monday in Kano State, Tinubu disclosed the information.

I was present the day my wife was installed as a pastor in the Redeemed Church, Tinubu remarked. “Pastor Adeboye gave me the name Abraham, and I asked what it meant. The father of the nation, he warned, “Watch out.”

The statement was made by Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, in defense of his selection of Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State and fellow Muslim who has stirred controversy in Nigerian politics ahead of the 2023 presidential race.

Remi, the wife of the APC presidential candidate, was ordained as a pastor in the RCCG in August 2018; Tinubu cited this event as evidence of his religious tolerance in an effort to win the Christian community’s support.
APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidential election was denounced by CAN in June due to imbalance and insensitivity to religion in Nigeria.

CAN maintains that it will not endorse the same faith presidential ticket put out by the APC for the 2023 election notwithstanding meetings and conversations with APC members.

For the nth time, CAN affirms its apolitical nature while remaining open to working with all national leaders and other relevant stakeholders to advance unity, peace, and progress. Accordingly, the umbrella Christian organization cannot be hostile to any well-meaning political party or group as the country gets ready for new elections in 2023, as indicated in the aforementioned report, according to Luminous Jannamike, a spokesman for CAN president Daniel Okoh.

In response to media claims that Tinubu had persuaded CAN leadership to back his campaign for president after attending Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah’s 70th birthday celebration in Abuja, Jannamike made the following statement.

To put it mildly, Jannamike said, “The narrative is ludicrous, malicious, untrue, and should be completely rejected by all sane members of the society.”
