Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has expressed concern over the increasing number of police officers losing their lives while performing their duties, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force continues to make heavy sacrifices in the fight against insecurity across the country.
Speaking during the inauguration of a modern Forensic and Investigation Centre established by Godfrey Okoye University in partnership with the Enugu State Government, Disu said officers remain committed to tackling crime, insurgency and banditry despite the risks involved.
“We are trying our best, and we are losing our men while doing it,” Disu lamented.
The police officers killed concern was highlighted by the recent death of three members of the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit in Maiduguri. According to the IGP, the officers were attempting to neutralise an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly planted by insurgents when the incident occurred.
He explained that the operatives chose not to postpone the mission because they wanted to prevent possible civilian casualties. “They were dedicated officers who wanted to save lives. Unfortunately, they fell into the trap laid by the insurgents, and we lost them,” he said.
Despite the losses, Disu assured Nigerians that security agencies remain focused on addressing threats nationwide. He stated that ongoing operations may not always be publicised but promised that positive results would soon emerge.
Addressing election security, the police chief reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to conducting peaceful and credible elections. He also revealed that the Force had submitted its position on state police to the National Assembly as discussions on policing reforms continue.
On manpower challenges, Disu admitted that the Force lacks sufficient personnel. However, he disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had approved the recruitment of 50,000 officers, with the process already advancing through medical screening stages.
The IGP also pledged increased police deployment in Enugu State to strengthen security and sustain the relative peace currently enjoyed by residents.
