A storey building collapsed in the Aromire area of Ikeja, Lagos State, killing one person.
On Wednesday evening, around 6:35 p.m., the incident occurred.
Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said in a statement on Thursday that the building formerly occupied by Kilms Mart was being worked on by unskilled laborers, resulting in a partial collapse.
“The Agency responded to distress calls and discovered that a storey building formerly occupied by KILMS MART was being worked on by unskilled laborers, resulting in a partial collapse,” he said.
“An adult male reported to be a welder lost his life instantly at the scene. His body was found and removed from the scene.
“The post-disaster assessment conducted by the Agency’s LRT indicates that the building is stable and does not pose a threat to other buildings around.
The structure has been cordoned off, and the LASBCA and Nigeria Police have been contacted for further action.”
An LASBCA official, who preferred anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the incident, told our correspondent that demolition efforts were ongoing.
“We have marked the building for demolition,” he said. “All we have to do now is wait for the machine.”
