A new National Language Policy that makes mother tongue a required medium of instruction from Primary one to Primary six has been authorized by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

When he briefed reporters on the conclusions of the council meeting that President Buhari presided over in Abuja on Wednesday, Nov. 30, Minister of Education Adamu Adamu made this revelation. He disclosed that the mother tongue will be used exclusively for the first six years of education and then blended with English from junior secondary school while stating that the government is aware that implementation will be challenging.

Even if the policy has been put into place, in his opinion, it cannot be completely executed until the government creates instructional materials and has access to trained teachers. According to him, each school will utilize the language that is most often spoken in the neighborhood where it is located as the mother tongue.
