Babatunji Wusu –
Salisu Rabiu, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party, was killed in a recent demonstration in Kano State against an appeal court decision to remove Governor Abba Yusuf.
One of the people shot by police as they dispersed demonstrators was football player Rabiu.
On Wednesday, demonstrators gathered in several places around the state holding signs that read, among other things, “Our mandate must restored,” “Kano voted for Abba,” and “Injustice exposed in CTC.”
The demonstrators voiced their disapproval by chanting solidarity songs while donning the color red, which is associated with the Kwankwasiyya, a socio-religious movement led by former Kano governor and NNPP 2023 presidential contender Rabiu Kwankwaso.
At several of the state’s entrances, police were visible. The route leading to Katsina State was closed by the demonstrators, making it impossible for passengers to go.
A police inspector who fired a shot without following the established chain of command killed one protester and critically injured two others in the Fagge Local Government Area of the state, according to a statement released by the state’s police spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa. The other protester passed away while undergoing medical attention at the hospital.
