The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, read a letter from the Senator representing Bauchi North, Samaila Dahuwa Kaila, announcing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was formally announced during plenary, marking another major political gain for the ruling APC and a fresh setback for the opposition PDP in the upper legislative chamber.

In his letter addressed to the Senate President, Senator Kaila cited prolonged internal crises, division, and lack of cohesion within the PDP as reasons for his exit, saying the situation had hindered his ability to effectively represent his constituents.

“The incessant internal squabbles that have led to unnecessary factionalisation within the PDP have seriously affected my ability to deliver on my constitutional responsibilities as an elected representative. After wide consultations with my supporters and political associates, I have decided to resign my membership of the PDP and join the All Progressives Congress,” the letter partly read.

After reading the letter, Senate President Akpabio welcomed Kaila to the ruling party, noting that his decision reflected the growing confidence of Nigerians in the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

The defection of Senator Kaila further depletes the ranks of the opposition in the Senate, where several lawmakers have, in recent months, dumped their parties to join the ruling APC.
