Babatunji Wusu –
In the governorship elections scheduled for November 11 in the states of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it does not have a candidate.
This was disclosed in a statement that Commission Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu made accessible to the media on Thursday in Abuja.
In addition, Yakubu promised to guarantee fairness for all political parties and candidates in the polls, noting that the Commission’s personnel is prepared for the off-cycle elections.
According to the INEC chairman, the Commission’s duty is to protect the democratic process and guarantee that all political parties and candidates have an equal opportunity to compete.
“5,169,692 Nigerians who obtained their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) are anticipated to cast ballots in off-cycle governorship elections in less than 48 hours,” he stated. These elections are being held simultaneously in all three of the nation’s geopolitical zones—North Central (Kogi), South East (Imo), and South South (Bayelsa)—for the first time in our history.
I would want to urge all of our officials—regular and ad hoc—to exhibit the utmost professionalism and patriotism as Election Day draws near. We have no candidate in the election, as I have stated numerous times, including on my most recent readiness assessment trips to the three States. INEC is not a political party.
