The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has stated that the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) is close to apprehending Nadeem Anjarwalla, the Binance Regional Manager for Africa, who recently escaped from custody in Nigeria.
During a press conference at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, Egbetokun addressed the escape episode and the broader issues that the police face in tackling crime across the country.
On March 22, 2024, Anjarwalla, 38, escaped from a’safe house’ where he and a coworker were detained.
The circumstances surrounding his escape have sparked worry and inquiries, demanding an immediate response from INTERPOL and Nigerian authorities.
“I am not going to tell you what INTERPOL is doing, but I must tell you that we are doing a lot. I can assure you that the suspect would be re-arrested,” stated Egbetokun.
In addition to addressing the escape incident, the IGP delivered a full assessment on Nigeria’s security situation, including an increase in abduction and murder cases over the last eight weeks.
According to police records, 214 kidnappings and 537 homicides have occurred throughout this time period. Egbetokun further stated that 3,685 individuals had been arrested in connection with various crimes, and 401 kidnapped victims had been safely rescued.
Egbetokun stressed the police’s commitment to taking a proactive and strategic approach to law enforcement, utilizing technology and intelligence to anticipate and disrupt criminal activity.
“Through meticulous analysis of available information, we shall endeavour to pre-empt criminal activities, disrupt their illicit networks, and apprehend perpetrators swiftly,” he explained.
