Jurgen Klopp Set for Germany Head Coach Role

Jurgen Klopp is widely expected to become the new head coach of the Germany men’s national football team, with the German Football Association (DFB) scheduling a press conference for Friday.

The DFB announced that journalists have been invited to its headquarters in Frankfurt for a briefing at 9 a.m. GMT, although it did not reveal the subject. Reports indicate the association’s governing bodies must first approve Klopp’s appointment before it becomes official.

The 59-year-old, regarded as one of football’s most successful managers, is expected to sign a contract that will keep him in charge of Germany until 2030, when the next FIFA World Cup will be held.

Since 2025, Jurgen Klopp has served as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, overseeing the company’s football clubs, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls. German media reports say Red Bull will release him from his contract without demanding a transfer fee, accepting instead a €1 million (USD 1.1 million) donation to its Wings for Life charity, which supports research into spinal cord injuries.

The Germany coaching vacancy arose after the DFB dismissed Julian Nagelsmann following the team’s disappointing exit from this summer’s World Cup, where they lost to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32.

Germany have struggled to match their past success since winning the 2014 World Cup, suffering group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022 and winning only one knockout match across their last five major tournaments.

Jurgen Klopp built his coaching reputation at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before enjoying a memorable spell with Liverpool, where he won the Premier League in 2020, ending the club’s 30-year wait for the title, and also guided the Reds to Champions League glory. He stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, citing fatigue.
