Operatives from the Imo State Police Command have taken Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), into custody.
The police swept Ajaero away from the ongoing demonstration in the state of Imo.
The development happened as thugs attacked demonstrators, damaging cars and wounding laborers, according to Vanguard.
As of the time this report was filed, the NLC President was being taken away by heavily armed security officers, thus it is unknown where he is.As the union begins its protest today, Ajaero had earlier ordered all Union members and associate unions to close all sectors in Imo State, including the air, land, and sea.
At the conclusion of the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, which was place late on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in the state capital of Owerri, Ajaero declared the start of the protest.
The governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, was charged by the president of the NLC with violating and ignoring worker welfare.
He said that numerous workers in the state have perished as a result of the governor’s unfriendly acts toward them and the failure to pay their salary.
Speaking further, Ajaero bemoaned the state government’s disregard for the federal minimum wage and charged Uzodimma of abandoning earlier agreements, particularly the one that was struck on January 9, 2021.
