Babatunji Wusu –

The Ijebu East Local Government’s suspended chairman has been freed, according to the State Security Service (SSS).

The secret police detained Mr. Adedayo on Friday after he accepted their invitation in connection with an accusation he made against Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Mr. Adedayo claimed that Mr. Abiodun was transferring federal funds to local governments in the state in a letter to Segun Osoba, a former governor of the state. In petitions to two federal anti-corruption bodies, he reiterated the accusations.

However, less than 15 hours after senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and human rights attorney Femi Falana called for his release, the SSS said that Mr. Adedayo had been freed.

“I’m going to court.”

Speaking to media soon after his release on Monday, Mr. Adedayo vowed to pursue legal action regarding his arrest.

In response to a question about the reason for his detention, Mr. Adedayo stated: “They claimed there was a letter from the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, that I was making inciting remarks against the state administration. However, I assured them that there was nothing similar, so who did they accuse me of inciting? They claimed that I was organizing a protest, but I denied knowing anything about that and maintained that I had merely followed my conscience. I did this together with my other colleagues’ chairpersons even though they all fled.

“In the letter I addressed to Chief Olusegun Osoba, the former governor of the state and a national figure in our party, the APC, my conscience was quite clear.

“I’ll without a doubt go to court to contest my unlawful suspension because, on the day of my suspension, more than 100 police officers visited my local government, and I asked them to do what,” the man said. Maybe I wouldn’t even be here in one piece if I had shown my face that day.

Mr. Adedayo responded when informed that the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) members claimed no money was lost:

“Let them inform the EFCC of that. They have received my mails.

Who even is JAAC? The local government chairmen should be prepared to answer questions from the public if they each allege that they have been collecting funds intended for council area development.
