According to the BBC, the UK Supreme Court has ruled that the British government’s contentious proposal to transfer asylum seekers to Rwanda is illegal.

This concept was meant to deter people from making risky crossings of the Channel in small boats.

Individuals in Rwanda will be given the option of seeking refuge within the country, returning to their home country, or seeking asylum in another country, excluding the United Kingdom.

However, Lord Reed, the court’s President, believes there is a “real risk” that asylum seekers may be returned to the countries from which they fled.

Legal objections have impeded the proposal from its announcement in 2022; the High Court initially declared it lawful, but the Court of Appeal later reversed that ruling.

The Court of Appeal’s ruling has now been upheld by the Supreme Court.

Later, more information.
