Tunji Wusu –
The Second Niger bridge’s newly installed road fittings have been destroyed by thieves.
It was discovered that the expansion joint walkway on axis 330 of the bridge was removed during the vandalism on Wednesday at the site.
According to a source, “Unfortunately, It’s real. The stolen fitting is a component of the bridge’s expansion joints. Drivers on that route must exercise caution because the damaged area may irritate them.
The project’s managing engineers have reportedly raised concern over the occurrence.
Recall that on May 23, 2023, the N336 billion bridge and seven other infrastructure projects were inaugurated by the previous president Muhammadu Buhari.
After over 50 years of broken promises by various administrations, the bridge was finally completed in October 2022, according to the former Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola.
The Federal Government also opened the Second Niger Bridge on December 15, 2022, to help with holiday traffic in the South-East.
Shehu Shagari, a candidate for the National Party of Nigeria in 1978–1979, first suggested building the Second Niger Bridge during that year’s political campaign.
The 1.6-kilometer-long bridge connecting the states of Anambra and Delta, which was designed after Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge, will relieve traffic on the country’s current Niger Bridge, spur economic growth, and link the South-East to the rest of the country.
