Before Justice A.A. Bello of the Kaduna State High Court, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Kaduna Zonal Command successfully obtained the conviction of Oluwayemisi Samuel and her son, Joshua Samuel, on separate counts of one count each bordering on false information.
This was stated in a statement released by the commission on Wednesday.
The statement claims that Oluwayemisi and Joshua wasted N5,600,000 on sports betting and induced the EFCC to receive a bogus petition alleging that the money was fraudulently transferred from their Opay account to a sports betting account without their consent by an unidentified person.
They admitted guilt to the accusations.
N. Salele, the prosecution’s attorney, urged the court to convict the defendants in accordance with their pleas.
However, Justice Bello found both defendants guilty and sentenced them to 7 years in jail, each with the possibility of a N150,000 fine.
