The Lagos State Government has opened an official investigation into an incident involving an ambulance and a female bystander near the finish line of the 11th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon held on Saturday.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed that the government swiftly moved to ascertain the facts following reports that the woman came into contact with an ambulance deployed to evacuate athletes requiring urgent medical attention.

Omotoso explained that event officials immediately stepped in when the situation unfolded. The emergency medical team promptly assessed the woman at the scene, administered first aid, and stabilised her before transferring her to a public hospital for further medical evaluation.

“She sustained minor bruises and complained of chest discomfort, but she was stabilised on-site, and her vital signs were closely monitored,” Omotoso stated.

He added that the woman is currently receiving treatment and responding well under medical supervision.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health, working alongside the Lagos State Sports Commission, has intensified oversight of the case, while senior government officials have visited the hospital to ensure she receives adequate care.

Omotoso assured residents that authorities are conducting a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to prevent a recurrence.

The development gained traction online after a video surfaced on social media allegedly showing the moment the bystander was struck by the ambulance during the marathon.
