The Lagos State Government has cautioned operators of articulated vehicles, tankers and trucks against speeding and other traffic violations, warning that offenders will face the full weight of the law.

The warning was issued by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, in a statement released on Sunday in Lagos.

Giwa spoke in reaction to a road traffic accident involving a heavy-duty truck conveying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and a privately owned vehicle at the crest of Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi.

According to him, preliminary security assessments revealed that the truck, with registration number EKY 120 YK, was travelling at excessive speed in violation of established traffic regulations when it rammed into a moving silver-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number EKY 289 HM.

“The force of the collision caused severe traffic disruption and posed a significant threat to lives and property within the surrounding area,” Giwa said.

He disclosed that two pedestrians were struck in the course of the incident, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained serious injuries.

Giwa said officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly responded to the scene and successfully rescued the injured victims from the wreckage.

He added that the injured pedestrians and the driver were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving intensive medical care.

To ensure public safety during the rescue operation, personnel from the Ajao Estate Police Division were deployed to provide security, preventing further incidents and allowing emergency responders to operate without hindrance.

Giwa also disclosed that due to the highly combustible nature of the truck’s cargo, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene as a precautionary measure.

Condemning the rising cases of road accidents caused by reckless driving, particularly among operators of heavy-duty vehicles, Giwa described such behaviour as irresponsible and dangerous.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting a safe, orderly and well-regulated transportation system and warned that any driver found endangering lives through unlawful driving practices would be prosecuted accordingly. (NAN)
