The Iseyin campus of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of a 200-level student from the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin town.
The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, sparked widespread protest among students of the institution, who took to major streets in Iseyin to express anger over the loss of their colleague and demand justice.
Eyewitnesses said the student was on his way back to the hostel when he was hit by a speeding vehicle whose driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. The victim was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Following the tense atmosphere on campus, the university management announced the suspension of academic activities for two weeks to allow for calm and mourning.
Confirming the development, the Registrar of LAUTECH, Mrs. Olayinka Balogun, said in a statement that the management deeply regretted the tragic incident and sympathised with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
The statement reads: “The Management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-Level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin.

“In light of this grievous loss, and in recognition of the emotional toll it has taken on our students and staff, the University Management has approved a two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin Campus, effective immediately.”
The statement further directed all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources to proceed on a two-week break, adding that classes will resume on Monday, November 24, 2025.
It also stated that officers on essential duties would be informed in the usual manner to ensure basic operations continue within the campus.
“We urge all students to remain safe, support one another, and honour the memory of their departed colleague,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the management assured that it is working closely with the police and other security agencies to ensure the driver responsible for the accident is apprehended and brought to justice.
The mood across the Iseyin campus remained sombre as students gathered in small groups mourning their colleague, describing him as a quiet and promising young man.
The police command in Oyo State is yet to issue an official statement as investigations continue into the incident.
