During the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time greatest scorer.

James scored a two-pointer in the third quarter to break the previous mark, and by the end of the game, he had 38390 total points. Much to his dismay, the Lakers fell short of the Thunder by three points; the final score was 130–133.

James appeared to be in tears after breaking the record. “It is humbling to be in front of such an icon as Abdul-Jabbar. Please give the captain a standing ovation, said the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer. He expressed gratitude to the NBA fraternity, his family, and friends for their unwavering support.

“I just want to say thank you so much to everyone who has ever been a part of this run with me these last 20 years. Without all of your help, all of your passion, and all of your sacrifices to help me get to this point, I wouldn’t be me.”

After 20 seasons and 38,352 career points entering Wednesday’s game, James was just 36 points away from surpassing the mark set by Abdul-Jabbar during his own 20-season career.

Following his record-breaking skyhook during a game against the Utah Jazz on April 5, 1984, Abdul-Jabbar had held the scoring crown for almost 39 years.
