Amancio Amaro, a legend of Real Madrid known as “the magician,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83.
Before retiring in 1976, the right winger won nine league championships and one European Cup while playing for Los Blancos after joining them from Deportivo La Coruna.
Amancio contributed 155 goals in 471 appearances for Madrid before becoming the team’s coach in 1984–1985 play.
Real Madrid released a statement in which they said that Amancio, along with Paco Gento, “managed the Real Madrid side that came after the one that won five consecutive European Cups and reflects the ideals that have shaped the history of our club.”
“He will be regarded as one of the great legends of this sport by all Madridistas and by all football lovers.”
Amancio was crucial to Spain’s triumph in the 1964 European Championship.
After the passing of his former comrade Paco Gento in 2022, Amancio was named honorary president of Real Madrid.
