Babatunji Wusu –
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged Godwin Emefiele, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), of procurement fraud.
The anti-graft agency charged the former head of the Apex Bank of procurement fraud in relation to a N1.2 billion deal for 43 cars.
Emefiele was charged with abusing his position to provide Yaro a corrupt benefit by giving him a contract for N1.2 billion to buy 43 cars between 2018 and 2020.
After appearing in court at around ten in the morning, Emefiele was charged with six felonies and arraigned on Friday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.
The former governor of CBN was wearing a bright blue traditional outfit when he entered a “not guilty” plea to the amended allegation.
Later, he was placed under arrest in the Kuje jail facility and kept there until November 22 when his bail application was decided.
The former governor of the highest bank was facing six criminal accusations, down from the original seven brought by the federal government.
The new accusation, designated CR/577/2023, still has certain procurement fraud allegations, but the number of counts was lowered, and Emefiele was named as the only defendant.
Below are the list of 43 vehicles allegedly bought by Emefiele.
1. 37 Toyota Hilux vehicles: N854.7m
2. One Toyota Avalon: N99.9m
3. One Toyota Landcruiser V8: N73.8m
3. Two Toyota Hilux Shell: N44.2m
4. Two Toyota Landcruiser VXR V8: N138m.
