At 39 years old, Luka Modric is set to bring his wealth of experience to AC Milan, as the seven-time European champions seek to rebound from one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory. Modric, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, arrived in Italy for a medical on Monday after parting ways with Real Madrid, where he spent 13 illustrious years and collected 28 major trophies.
A lifelong Milan supporter, inspired by Croatian legend Zvonimir Boban, Modric is expected to sign a one-year contract with an option for a second season. Last term, Milan finished eighth in Serie A, failing to qualify for European competitions, and promptly rehired Massimiliano Allegri as head coach. Allegri, who led Milan to a Serie A title in 2011 and later secured five consecutive titles with Juventus, has played a key role in orchestrating the signing.
Reports reveal Allegri consulted with former coach Carlo Ancelotti about Modric’s form, while Milan’s sporting director Igli Tare personally negotiated the deal at Croatia’s training camp. Although the transfer was agreed upon before the Club World Cup, Modric remained with Real Madrid until the tournament’s conclusion, marking his final match with the club in a semifinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Modric’s arrival signals Milan’s ambition to return to the pinnacle of Italian and European football.
