MACBAN chairman killed in Benue after gunmen ambushed vehicle following peace meeting.

MACBAN chairman killed in Benue has sparked fresh concerns over security after gunmen ambushed and killed the state leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and another man in Otukpo Local Government Area.

The attack happened on Friday as the victims travelled home from a peace meeting organised by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ohinmini Local Government Area. The meeting brought together Fulani leaders and members of the Ayunne community to discuss recent security challenges.

According to local officials, gunmen intercepted the victims’ vehicle at Okudu community in Otukpo and opened fire, killing MACBAN Chairman Ardo Muhammad and Yakubu Isah.

Muhammad’s eldest son confirmed the incident, saying his father was returning from the peace meeting when the attackers struck.

Meanwhile, Otukpo Local Government Chairman Maxwell Ogiri described the killing as disturbing. He said the incident had increased tension across Otukpo and neighbouring Ohinmini communities. However, he urged residents to remain calm while security agencies responded.

Similarly, Ohinmini Local Government Chairman Adole Gabriel confirmed that Muhammad attended the peace meeting, which participants described as successful. He said the victims were attacked shortly after leaving the gathering.

Furthermore, the Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack. Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet said officers had received the report and immediately launched an investigation to identify those responsible.

The MACBAN chairman killed incident comes amid persistent security concerns in parts of Benue State, where attacks on communities and travellers have remained a major challenge. Authorities have appealed for calm while investigations continue.
