In the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, Manchester City easily defeated Chelsea 4-0 at home, giving it three victories in a row over Graham Potter’s team in just two months.
After scoring the lone goal in the 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Thursday and in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the League Cup in November, Riyad Mahrez whipped in a free kick to put City in the lead in the 23rd minute.
On the halfway point, newly crowned World Cup champion Julian Alvarez of Argentina doubled their lead by converting a penalty after a VAR review revealed a handball by Kai Havertz.
In the 38th minute, Phil Foden finished off a deft team move involving England teammate Kyle Walker to score City’s third goal, effectively putting an end to the game as a contest.
Mahrez took the ball and slammed it past Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the 85th minute after the hosts won another penalty late in the second half. Alvarez was still on the field.
In the fourth round, City will host either League One team Oxford United or Premier League champion Arsenal, whose matchup is on Monday.
