The match, devoid of excitement, saw United edge closer to safety, moving up to 13th place, but still leaves City in a precarious position in fifth.
While City’s point keeps them in line for Champions League contention, they are only two points ahead of Newcastle, who have two games in hand. This, coupled with City’s significant drop in form after winning four consecutive league titles, means they are at risk of failing to secure a top-four finish for the first time since 2009/10. United, on the other hand, is now relying on a Europa League victory to earn a spot in next season’s Champions League, as they are on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish.
The match itself was far from thrilling, with both sides failing to produce quality chances.
