Manchester United is set to implement a weekly wage cap of £200,000 to prevent players from earning’significantly more’ than their teammates, according to the Daily Mail.

The Premier League club reportedly made the decision after Cristiano Ronaldo, who was earning £500,000 per week, severed ties with the club following a contentious interview.

This is said to be one of the steps taken by coach Erik ten Hag and CEO Richard Arnold to create a cohesive team. According to the report, the club is determined to end a “culture of dressing-room jealousy” by instituting a wage cap. Ground squabbles and discontent were commonplace in the Manchester United dressing room last season.

Several players, including goalkeeper David de Gea, will be affected once the new rule goes into effect. The Spanish keeper currently earns £ 375,000 per week.

Other senior players, such as Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, and now Bruno Fernandes, earn between £180,000 and £200,000 per week.

The club also recently activated a one-year extension clause in Marcus Rashford’s contract, which means his current contract will expire in 2024.
