To advance to the Women’s World Cup knockout phase and make even more history, Morocco defeated Colombia 1-0.
The first Arab or North African country to advance thus far in the Women’s World Cup is Morocco. Anissa Lahmari’s penalty-save rebound goal for Morocco in first-half stoppage time made them the only one of the eight tournament newbies to continue.
With the victory, Morocco advanced to the tournament in second place in its group, behind Colombia, eliminating two-time champion Germany.
A generation was motivated by Morocco’s Women’s World Cup qualification. The Atlas Lionesses, who were defeated 6-0 by Germany in their tournament debut but recovered with two victories, will be remembered for this, solidifying their history.
Khadija Er-Rmichi, the goalkeeper, contributed significantly to the victory by using her outstretched foot to block a shot from Colombia.
In order to maintain Morocco’s lead, she deflected a low, right-footed attempt from Mayra Ramirez in the 63rd minute and blocked another shot ten minutes later.
