All patent medication dealers, notably those at the Sabon Gari drugs open market, were given a two-week deadline by the Registrar of Pharmacy Council of Nigeria on Friday in Kano to shift to the new Coordinated Wholesale Centre on Zaria Road.
The goal of the move, according to the PCN Registrar, Pharm Ibrahim Ahmed, who spoke to reporters in Kano on Friday, is to strictly enforce the regulatory standards for the distribution and sale of medications.
He claims that since 2017, PCN has visited the site of the Kano CWC, which will be run by the Kanawa Pharmaceutical Partners Limited, and given it location approval.
The chaotic drug delivery system in Nigeria, including Kano, he noted, has been a significant problem for the quality, safety, and efficacy of medications and significantly worsens the problem of drug abuse and misuse in Nigeria.
“Unfortunately, this problem has been made worse by the open drug markets that are found all over the nation. Poor storage facilities expose the medications to harsh environmental elements, such as high temperatures and humidity, which have an adverse effect on their quality, safety, and efficacy. The public is exposed to the risks of improper medication use when ethical items are sold without pharmacy supervision.
Similarly, the registrar expressed sorrow over the fact that the majority of drug stores in open drug markets in Nigeria are unregistered and have been operating illegally, noting that the illicit selling of drugs to the general public leads to issues with social order and security.
The PCN registrar issued a warning that the sale of drugs in Sabon Gari market and other congregated plazas throughout Kano State would no longer be tolerated following the commissioning of the CWC on Friday.
The Registrar concluded by advising all concerned drug sellers in Kano to relocate to the CWC in their own self-interest, failing which the Enforcement Department of the PCN will close all drug stores that are present in open drug markets throughout the nation.
