According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), excessive fasting for religious reasons can damage the kidney. Nigerians have been warned against it.
In Abuja, at a briefing, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye encouraged Nigerians to fast with common sense or pay with their kidneys.

Adeyeye stated: “Kidney failure, liver damage, others, I don’t know how many have died in Nigeria owing to inferior medicines and unwholesome diets. I also urge Nigerians to stop buying medicines from hawkers and street-corner vendors.

But as a very devout nation, both Muslims and Christians fast frequently, which contributes to the kidney issue. Because your body has to be in a state of homeostasis, or balance, your water level must be sufficient for your organs to function. Some people will refrain from drinking much water for 10, 20, or longer periods of time. One is punishing the kidney.

“Now, if you add chemicals to it, it exponentially triples and damages the kidneys. This is due to the kidney’s lack of water for filtration and dilution.

“I fast, but I fast sensibly.” If we don’t practice common sense, we will pay with our kidneys. Additionally, avoid purchasing drugs from corner stores and hawkers. however, medications from pharmacies.
