Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), has received an apology from the National Association of Nigerian Students for the arrest of Aminu Mohammed, a student at the Federal University of Dutse Jigawa, by the Nigerian Police.

Condemnations had followed Mohammed’s alleged detention over a tweet about the First Lady. Aisha Yesufu, a well-known social activist in Nigeria, came under fire for allegedly abusing her position to harm the student.

According to NANS, Mohammed was actually detained by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command after being tracked to Jigawa, as opposed to the Department of State Services as initially reported.

Usman Barambu, the president of NANS, issued a statement on Tuesday in which he apologized to the First Lady on behalf of Nigerian students and demanded Mohammed’s release.

The news of Mohammed’s wrongful detention by the Nigeria Police on Aisha Buhari’s orders was “received with worry by the leadership of NANS. Upon hearing the news, Mohammed’s family, friends, and I immediately got to work trying to find him. After several days of looking, we learned that he was at the Wuse Zone 2 police station. Mohammed and I met at the police station.

Aisha Buhari’s photo was allegedly uploaded on Twitter a few weeks ago with the remark “Su mama anchi kudin talakawa a koshi,” which translates from Hausa to “the mother has gotten fatter by devouring the money of the people.”

Just as in everyday life, people can vent their rage in various ways on social media. According to Barambu, on November 18, 2022, the police from Abuja located Mohammed at the Federal University of Dutse and arrested him without giving him a written or verbal invitation or telling the school administration or his family.

Mohammed was allegedly brutalized, tortured, mistreated, and humiliated by the police “on the orders of Aisha Buhari,” according to the NANS President, who also claimed that Mohammed was wrongfully kept at a police facility in Wuse Zone II until this day. Mohammed and I met at the police station where he confirmed the occurrence to me. I was there with our legal team. Mohammed has not yet been charged by a court of law or been given bail by the police.

“We want to offer the First Lady Aisha Buhari our sincere apologies for Mohammed’s actions that may have upset her and her family on behalf of all Nigerian students. But if we want to truly move forward and act morally, as leaders and holders of public office, we must set aside some objections,” Barambu remarked.

The statement read, “We want a full explanation from the Nigeria Police on why they will enter the school grounds and ‘kidnap’ a student without due process and take him straight to the Presidential Villa where he was brutalized which violates his fundamental human rights.

Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, disagreed with the president and stated in a separate statement that Mohammed’s rights had been gravely violated by the First Lady’s alleged behavior.

“The behavior of Aisha and the security personnel involved in the abuse meted out to Mohammed is really deplorable and demonstrates Aisha’s intolerance for criticism. If there was a democratic system in place, it would have been assumed that the President’s wife would have filed a lawsuit against the student, if there was one.

The President’s wife and everyone else involved erred and violated Mohammed’s (Mohammed’s) right to dignity of human persons as guaranteed by Section 34 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 Constitution. It has been established that the student was “abducted” by the police, transported to the Presidential Villa, where he was tortured on Aisha’s orders, and then imprisoned at a police facility in Wuse II (as amended).

Temitope stated, “Our view as an association is that the wife of the President has displayed behaviour outside the provisions of the Nigerian law, which has thus nullified any claims they may have against him.
