The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has described the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, as an “Infrastructure Bulldozer” following an inspection tour of the Owo-Benin, Akure-Owo and Ilesa roads.

The NANS President, Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, disclosed this in a press release dated October 10, 2026, following the association’s nationwide federal roads project tour.

Afeez said he led a high-powered delegation of the students’ body to inspect the roads, which he described as critical routes for students, commuters and other road users across the South-West.

According to him, the roads are particularly important to students travelling to Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and the University of Benin.

He noted that thousands of students use the routes daily, making their condition a significant concern for student welfare, road safety and access to education.

The NANS president also highlighted the importance of the Ilesa Road to commuters and students travelling within the South-West, stressing that its condition formed part of the association’s assessment of federal road infrastructure in the region.

Afeez said the association’s responsibility extended beyond demanding improved roads to inspecting ongoing federal projects, acknowledging commendable efforts and drawing attention to areas requiring improvement.

He commended Umahi for his commitment to road infrastructure development across the country, describing the minister as an “Infrastructure Bulldozer.”

The students’ body also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising infrastructure development and initiatives aimed at addressing the welfare concerns of Nigerian students.

The NANS president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to constructive engagement, accountability and the promotion of the collective interests of Nigerian students.

The inspection forms part of NANS’ nationwide efforts to assess federal road projects and draw attention to infrastructure affecting students and commuters across the country.
