The National President of the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), Mr. Raymond O. Isiadinso, has called on the National Assembly to strengthen proposed bills related to the livestock and animal science sector by incorporating the insights and recommendations of core professionals.

Speaking during a legislative session, Mr. Isiadinso said he appeared before lawmakers to present the collective position of the animal science community, backed by extensive legal review and professional evaluation conducted by experts within the association. He noted that ASAN carefully examined the existing Acts guiding the profession, identifying areas of conflict and gaps in the emerging proposals.

According to him, the association accepted the general direction of the bills but offered key observations and amendments to ensure the frameworks are well-structured and sustainable. “If a proposal is built on a weak foundation, it will fail on arrival,” he cautioned. “We are here to support proponents of these bills so that implementation will be smooth and beneficial to all regions.”

Mr. Isiadinso explained that the association recommended clearer categorizations within the livestock sector—such as proper recognition of micro-livestock—to ensure coherent and inclusive development across the country. He emphasized that every region should benefit from the institutions being established, with each contributing meaningfully to national agricultural growth.

He further stressed the importance of placing registered and qualified animal scientists in leadership roles within any new councils, boards, or institutions arising from the bills. “These are professional, content-driven establishments,” he said. “Without proper guidance by core professionals, growth will be slow. But with the right expertise in place, development will be fast, structured, and impactful.”

The ASAN president noted that the association did not oppose any of the proposed bills but instead provided solutions to strengthen them. He affirmed the association’s commitment to helping lawmakers build robust, future-oriented legislation capable of transforming Nigeria’s livestock and animal science industry.
