The Nigerian Navy has rescued three individuals who attempted to travel illegally to Europe by hiding on a merchant vessel in Lagos. The incident highlights ongoing concerns over illegal migration and maritime security in Nigeria’s coastal waters.

The suspects were found aboard the vessel, MSC STELLA (IMO No. 9279988), during a routine naval operation near the Lagos Fairway Buoy. Personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT carried out the rescue after receiving intelligence from the Western Regional Control Centre.

According to Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, authorities received the alert at about 5:05 p.m. on April 19. A Quick Response Team from Tarkwa Bay moved swiftly and located the stowaways roughly five nautical miles off the Lagos coast. Their prompt action ensured the safe recovery of the individuals.

Further investigations showed that the suspects boarded the vessel around 1 a.m. on April 17 while it was docked at Tin Can Island Port. They reportedly planned to use the ship to gain unlawful entry into Europe, a risky route often linked to illegal migration attempts.

The rescued individuals have been identified as Aguru Michael, 27, from the Benin Republic; Soye Monday, 25, from Ondo State; and Kentobou Peter, 22, from Delta State. Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the case.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s waters and preventing unlawful activities, including illegal migration, along its maritime routes.

What measures do you think can help reduce dangerous illegal migration attempts through Nigeria’s waterways?
