Regarding the recent announcement of a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Benue, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has provided clarification.
The World Health Organization (WHO) monitoring officer’s statement was misconstrued, according to a statement released by the NCDC on its official website on Friday. The news reported that 25 additional cases had been discovered.
The officer reportedly stated that Benue registered a total of 25 new cases in 2023, with the last instance being documented in mid-April, at a meeting held by the Benue State Primary Healthcare Board in cooperation with WHO in Makurdi, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The surveillance officer then advised individuals to use the COVID-19 vaccine as a means of self-immunization against the virus.
Nonetheless, the NCDC released data on the overall COVID-19 situation in the nation, revealing that 6,013,826 tests were performed overall, with 267,184 confirmed cases and 3,155 fatalities.
Furthermore, it stated that “15,481 tests were performed in the final quarter of 2023, confirming 75 cases across 25 states.”
“The Federal Government, through the NCDC, integrated COVID-19 testing into routine disease surveillance, despite the World Health Organization’s declaration that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.”
As a result, the NCDC emphasized the significance of media responsibility in reporting and acknowledged the media’s vital role in both public health and national security.
In addition to expressing gratitude for the media partnership, it called for the appropriate transmission of information to avert any hazards to public health resulting from disinformation.
The NCDC restated its dedication to safeguarding Nigerians’ health, upholding transparency, and keeping lines of communication open in order to deliver precise and timely information on issues of critical public health relevance.
