By Eppe Franklyne| The Netherlands will be without defender Jurriën Timber at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Arsenal star failed to recover from a persistent groin injury.
The Dutch national team confirmed the setback on Monday, ending hopes that the 24-year-old would be fit enough to feature in the tournament. Timber had recently returned to action after a two-month spell on the sidelines and played in Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.
Despite that appearance, medical evaluations determined that he was not in a condition to participate safely in the World Cup.
“The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan,” the Dutch team said in a statement.
The absence of Jurriën Timber is a major blow for coach Ronald Koeman, who had counted on the versatile defender as an important part of his plans for the tournament.
To fill the vacancy, Koeman has called up Lutsharel Geertruida of Sunderland to join the squad ahead of the competition.
The injury setback comes at a crucial time for the Dutch side as preparations intensify for their opening fixture. The Netherlands have been drawn in Group F alongside Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia.
The Dutch will kick off their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14, hoping to begin the tournament strongly despite the loss of one of their key defensive players.
For Jurriën Timber, the news marks a disappointing end to months of rehabilitation, with the defender now set to focus on his recovery ahead of the new club season.
