New details have come to light regarding the tragic passing of Brigadier-General O.O. Braimoh, who lost his life during a violent insurgent raid on a military base in Borno State. According to reports from military sources, the high-ranking officer was killed after an attempt to escape the ambush was thwarted by a critical mechanical failure.

The incident occurred when fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a heavy assault on a formation in Benisheikh, located within the Kaga Local Government Area. Witnesses say the insurgents utilized explosives and intense gunfire in an attack that lasted several hours. Brigadier-General Braimoh reportedly attempted to maneuver away from the danger using a bulletproof vehicle. However, the armored transport failed to start, leaving him trapped and vulnerable to the attackers.

Disturbing allegations have surfaced following the event, with insiders pointing toward systemic issues within the military hierarchy. Sources suggested that negligence and corruption may have played a role in the equipment failure. While the Federal Government allocates specific funds for fuel and vehicle maintenance, claims have emerged that these resources are sometimes mismanaged. Junior officers have reportedly noted that requests for repairs are often met with instructions to “manage” faulty equipment, a practice that proves fatal in emergency combat situations.

The assault also claimed the lives of the Brigade Imam and several other personnel, while many others remain missing or injured. Although official statements often suggest the insurgency is under control, this latest tragedy in the North-East highlights the persistent threat posed by ISWAP. The loss of such a senior commander underscores the urgent need for reliable logistics and equipment for those serving on the front lines.

How can the military better ensure that essential equipment is maintained to protect officers in the field?
