Joelinton, a Newcastle United midfielder, was charged with drink-driving after being pulled over by police in the early hours of Thursday. He is scheduled to appear in court at the end of January.

“Officers pulled over a vehicle in the Ponteland Road area of Newcastle shortly before 1.20am today (Thursday) and arrested the occupant,” a Northumbria Police spokesperson said.

“Joelinton Cassio, 26, of Ponteland, has since been charged with driving while exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit.

“He is scheduled to appear before Newcastle magistrates on January 26.”

This season, the Brazilian has appeared in 21 games for Eddie Howe’s team, scoring three goals and assisting on three others.

Reuters has reached out to Newcastle for comment. Newcastle, according to Sky Sports, was aware of the incident but declined to comment.
