Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the WTO, has lamented the rate at which young, educated Nigerians are leaving the nation in search of better opportunities.
Speaking on May 15 at the 2023 induction ceremony for newly elected and re-elected governors, the former finance minister claimed that if Nigerian youth can prosper at home, they won’t be eager to move overseas.
Okonjo-Iweala urged the governors to concentrate on nation-building and invest in the infrastructure & education system of their various states, emphasizing that Nigeria will struggle to “develop & prosper” if the youth keep fleeing the country.
According to her, “We are well positioned to seize these opportunities given our substantial educated population, fluency in English, and broad network of contacts to the diaspora.
But if we continue to lose so many of our most talented young people to emigration, such enterprises, like our software startups, will struggle to prosper.
