The United States announced on Wednesday that it has imposed visa bans on individuals who disrupted recent Nigerian elections.
The US State Department quoted Secretary of State Antony Binken as announcing the ban on the unnamed individuals in a statement.
“We are committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. “Today, I am announcing visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election,” said Mr Blinken.
He also stated that certain family members of such people may be subject to the restrictions.
Mr Blinken went on to say that the visa restrictions apply only to specific individuals and are not directed at the Nigerian people or the Nigerian government.
He stated that the decision to impose visa restrictions reflects the US commitment to supporting Nigerian aspirations to combat corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law.
Governorship elections in Osun, Ekiti, and Anambra states were recently held in Nigeria.
The governors elected in those states have been sworn in, with Ademola Adeleke of Osun being the most recent.
Nigeria is scheduled to hold general elections on February 25 and March 11 to elect new leaders, including a new president and legislature.
