Nigeria’s fuel consumption fell sharply in June 2025, with total evacuation dropping to 1.44 billion litres, according to data released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The Director of Public Affairs, George Ene-Ita, disclosed on Wednesday that the country averaged 48.03 million litres of fuel consumption daily, revising earlier reports that placed the figure at 38.94 million litres.

The June total marks a 16.42% decline compared to May’s 1.77 billion litres, representing a drop of more than 290 million litres. Ene-Ita attributed the calculation to a daily average derived from the total monthly volume divided by 30 days.

A breakdown of the report showed mixed trends across fuel types. Diesel supply rose slightly by 1.73% to 432.18 million litres, up from 424.83 million litres in May, but its distribution plunged by 23.23% to 424.06 million litres. Household kerosene supply and distribution both slid by 13%, from nearly 9 million litres in May to 7.79 million litres in June.

Petrol recorded the steepest drop, with supply crashing by almost 48%, from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June. Distribution fell 16.54% during the same period.

Lagos topped the list of fuel recipients with 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun (88.69 million litres), the Federal Capital Territory (77.51 million litres) and Oyo (72.81 million litres).

The report signals persistent distribution and supply challenges in the midstream and downstream petroleum sectors. NMDPRA pledged to work with industry stakeholders to strengthen supply chains and ensure uninterrupted fuel availability nationwide.
