Babatunji Wusu –
Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has launched a fresh bail request amid continuing legal challenges to the federal government’s treasonable felony accusations.
The Federal High Court in Abuja’s trial Justice Binta Nyako received the bail application from Kanu’s attorney, Mr. Alloy Ejimakor, on February 5.
In reaction to this development, the Federal Government has assigned eminent Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chief Adegboyega Awomolo to lead the prosecution of Kanu’s case.
During the court hearings, Awomolo verified that he was aware of and had received Kanu’s most recent bail request.
After being arrested by security forces in Lagos on October 14, 2015, Kanu was extradited from Kenya on June 29, 2021, and has been detained ever since.
Even after Judge Nyako granted him release in April 2017 due to health concerns, Kanu left Nigeria following a military raid that killed some of his supporters in Umuahia, Abia State.
On October 13, 2022, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal ordered the release of the pro-Biafra advocate, alleging procedural violations in his forcible extradition. This marked a key turning point in the advocate’s legal path.
But the Federal Government was not happy with this result, so it appealed the case to the Supreme Court, which reversed the appellate court’s decision on December 15, 2023, enabling the trial to continue.
