A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operative has lost his life after suspected illegal miners attacked officers during an enforcement operation at Korokpa Village, on the outskirts of Minna, the Niger State capital.
The incident happened when the NSCDC Mining Marshal team carried out a routine patrol after receiving intelligence that illegal mining activities were taking place at the site, including during the night. As the officers approached the location, they reportedly found that some of the suspected illegal miners were armed. This discovery forced the team to call for reinforcement before continuing the operation.
During the reinforcement mission, one officer suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was quickly taken to a nearby medical facility, but despite efforts by medical personnel, he later died from his injuries.
Confirming the attack, NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Niger State, Abubakar Muti, said, “Operatives of the NSCDC Mining Marshal were on a routine operational patrol at an illegal mining site located in Korokpa Village when they came under attack by suspected illegal miners and their collaborators.”
He added, “Upon sighting the NSCDC personnel, the suspects launched a coordinated and unprovoked attack on the patrol team in an apparent attempt to resist lawful enforcement operations. The operatives promptly requested reinforcement to contain the situation and restore order.”
Muti further stated, “During the reinforcement operation, one of the responding officers was fatally shot in the head by the assailants. The injured officer was immediately evacuated from the scene and rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel to save his life, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.”
The NSCDC has not confirmed whether any suspects have been arrested, while authorities are expected to release more information as investigations continue.
