The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has cautioned nurses against migrating to countries currently engulfed in war, urging them instead to dedicate their expertise to improving the nation’s healthcare system.
The Registrar of the Council, Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, made the appeal during the induction and oath-taking ceremony for 69 graduating nurses of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State. Represented by a director in the Council, Dr. Olukemi Awe, Alhassan advised the new professionals to resist the growing “japa” trend and focus on contributing meaningfully to the health needs of Nigerians.
He specifically warned against relocating to conflict-prone countries such as Russia, Ukraine, and Israel, noting that such moves could endanger their lives and derail their professional growth.
“Your decision to become a nurse is not just a career choice but a noble calling,” Alhassan said. “This is the beginning of your professional journey, and while nursing offers global opportunities, Nigeria still needs your service. Please, do not rush to leave the country. If you must travel, avoid war-torn regions. We need you here to strengthen our healthcare system.”
The induction marked the formal entry of the graduates into the nursing profession, with the NMCN reaffirming its commitment to uphold standards and promote ethical practice among practitioners across the country.
