Kenneth Okonkwo, a spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign council, described what occurred to Doyin Okupe, the embattled Director General of the Labour Party presidential campaign of Peter Obi, as a political ambush.
Okonkwo made this claim during an interview with Arise Television on Wednesday.
He added, “We do not have anything to worry about, because the best they have received is that the man made an honest mistake. However, in the PDP, President Olusegun Obasanjo, who happened to be the only principal that Atiku Abubakar ever served as a political appointment, stated that Atiku is one of the most corrupt people on the planet. He is the only principal who can evaluate him.
“According to Wike, Ayu is the most corrupt National Chairman on record. He claimed to have amassed billions of naira and that Atiku is well aware of it. Has he stepped down?
“When it comes to comparisons, the worst of the Labour Party is still better than the best of the PDP and APC combined,” he explained.
Okupe resigned as Director General of the Obi-Datti campaign on Tuesday after being convicted by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja of collecting over N200 million in bribes from former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki.
Okupe resigned in a letter to his superior, the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
His choice, according to the report, was made to allow him to take his corruption case to court.
Okupe, the first defendant in the lawsuit brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was found to have broken the Money Laundering Act, according to Justice Ojukwu.
The judge found that “there is no proof that the money traveled through a financial institution,” despite the fact that the Act mandates that no person or organization receive any sum over N5 million or N10 million without first going through a financial institution.
The court ruled as a result that counts 34, 35, 36, and 59 against the first defendant, Dr. Okupe, were true.
The Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), in a statement issued earlier by its Media Officer, Diran Onifade, revealed that Okupe had paid the N13 million fine imposed by the court.
He stated that as the party that upholds the rule of law, its officials will immediately obey court judgments.
However, Onifade stated that appealing the sentence is a personal decision made by Okupe that the PCC cannot influence.
