As bank employees prepare to go on strike, the difficulty in getting hold of new naira notes could get worse starting on Monday.
The Nation learned that the strike was caused by bank employees being attacked by depositors of the old N, 1000, N, 500, and N 200 notes.
Bankers were instructed to avoid any State where banks were being attacked by depositors due to a lack of cash by the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI).
The association’s president, Comrade Olusoji Oluwole, said that the action would go on every day until everything returned to normal.
The instruction was included in a communication titled “Stay at home order” and addressed to the president and secretaries of all units, with the reference number ANS/WR/JA/OP/5018, dated February 17, 2023.
Part of it reads: “The National Secretariat has been on the ground to monitor and validate the claims of threats and attacks on members’ homes, businesses, and bank branches after being swamped with reports.
“We sent out warnings and appeals to the government to provide security measures for the safety of lives and property of our members inside and around the bank premises, but regrettably the attacks have persisted without any kind of security for the safety of our members, and the most recent was the attack today, Friday, February 17, 2023, on one bank branch in Epe, Lagos State.
“We cannot put our members’ lives and belongings in evident risk.
“As a result, all members should refrain from going to work today in any state where bank branches are being assaulted.
“This is going to keep happening every day until order is restored.
Please be aware that more instructions will be provided when the situation changes.
