OSPAC apprehends suspect after shooting at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, following an incident that sparked panic among students and staff.
Operatives of the Rumuolumeni OSPAC, led by Commander Kenneth Olumeni, arrested the suspect after gunmen reportedly entered the university community on Wednesday and opened fire.
The suspect, identified as Mr Smith, allegedly acted with other members of his group. They reportedly disrupted the peace around the university and sent students and staff running for safety.
A stray bullet reportedly struck a student during the shooting. The injured student was taken to the university hospital, where he received medical attention.
Meanwhile, other members of the group escaped from the area before OSPAC operatives could apprehend them.
However, the security group arrested Smith during the operation. Operatives also recovered a Toyota Corolla allegedly linked to the suspects.
The vehicle reportedly carries registration number BAYELSA NEM-425AE.
The latest incident follows another reported shooting around the university community on Monday. According to information available, the suspects allegedly caused another disturbance during that incident.
The two incidents have raised fresh concerns about security around the university and the safety of students and staff.
For now, details about the condition of the injured student and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s arrest remain limited.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident further and determine whether the arrested suspect was directly involved in the shooting.
