  • The Federal Government, via FGN Power Company and Siemens Energy, commissioned a 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation in Eleyele, Ibadan, on July 25, 2025.
  • The substation adds 50.4MW to transmission capacity, enhancing power supply to Eleyele, Apete, Ologuneru, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Sango, and Bodija.
  • Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu hailed the project as a step toward reliable and sustainable energy under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).
  • The PPI has added 922.4MW to Nigeria’s grid through eight transformers and six mobile substations, with a seventh substation planned for FUTO, Owerri.
  • Recent Oyo State projects include two 63MVA substations in University of Ibadan and Saapade, adding 100.8MW, plus plans to revive Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant and build a new substation in Lalupon/Ejioku.

On July 25, 2025, the Federal Government, through the FGN Power Company and Siemens Energy, commissioned a 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation at the Eleyele Transmission Substation in Ibadan, Oyo State. This milestone, part of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), aims to deliver reliable electricity to Eleyele and surrounding areas, including Apete, Ologuneru, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Sango, and Bodija. The substation boosts transmission capacity by 50.4MW, ensuring stable power for households and businesses, fostering economic growth in the region.

Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu, speaking at the commissioning, described the project as a testament to the government’s commitment to energy reform. He emphasized that the PPI is modernizing Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, with the pilot phase targeting over 1,300MW in added capacity. The Eleyele substation, he noted, is a critical step in alleviating transmission constraints and ensuring sustainable power for Oyo State and beyond.

Mr. Kenny Annuwe, Managing Director of FGN Power Company, highlighted the substation’s strategic role in empowering communities. He pointed to its immediate impact, with businesses like Fan Milk thriving in Eleyele due to improved power supply. Annuwe also outlined the PPI’s broader achievements, including eight power transformers adding 569.6MW and six mobile substations contributing 302.4MW to the national grid. A seventh substation at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, is set to add another 50.4MW, bringing the PPI’s total contribution to 922.4MW.

Recent energy projects in Oyo and neighboring states underscore this progress. In December 2024, two 63MVA substations were commissioned at the University of Ibadan and Saapade, Ogun State, adding 100.8MW to the grid. In May 2025, the government approved the revival of the Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant in Iseyin, upgrading it from 6MW to 20MW, and the construction of a 2x60MVA substation in Lalupon/Ejioku to serve Iwo Road, Monatan, Olodo, and nearby areas.

Hon. Kola Olabiyi, Chief Financial Officer of FGN Power Company, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Ministry of Power, NERC, Siemens Energy, and project teams for their dedication. He described the Eleyele substation as a symbol of collaborative effort, delivering rapid-response power solutions to underserved communities. Olabiyi reaffirmed the company’s commitment to building world-class infrastructure that drives sustainable development and powers Nigeria’s future.
